It is my opinion that students in K-12 must be monitored closely when they are using the internet or network to complete assignments or research. As some people may think that this is a violation of their privacy, I think that it is an opportunity to teach them how to safely use the internet. The brains of students in these age groups are not fully developed, and they don’t obtain full reasoning and judgment skills until they reach their 20s. Providing personal information to register for a cool game may seem innocent to a child; they may not realize that someone will use their personal information for malicious purposes. In the classroom I feel that students should be monitored closely. The book discussed programs that can used to monitor students as they use the internet. Some programs will generate reports of students who violate the parameters set in the class. I think this program is a great idea. In addition to ensuring that all parents have signed a release giving permission for their child to use the internet or to have his or her work publically posted, my policy would be to inform parents whose children are violating internet rules so that parents stay involved in the situation as well.
How will my future classroom be altered using technology-centered personalization?
I am an advocate of implementing technology in my classroom which is what has driven me to continue my education in Instruction Technology and Design. I do use a projector and PowerPoint presentations in my classes at this time, but emerging technology has left me somewhat behind in my instruction. The first concept that caught my attention was the flipped classroom. I have implemented the concept in one of my classes and found that students seem more engaged in what is taking place during class time. I plan to implement this concept in at least one other class in the fall. The second concept that caught my attention in Chapter 12 is the idea of digital badges. My initial thought is that students will be motivated as they receive badges for mastering concepts. I may be able to create friendly competition in class and award the top three students who earn the most badges thus promoting fun learning. The last concept from the chapter that interests me, particularly for my online classes, is the Personal Learning Environment. This will allow students to share work and collaborate in their personalized area. They may feel more involved if they can customize their learning, especially if the focus is for socialization and sharing information with others.
I enjoyed this week’s assignments: Thinglink and Scoop It. I plan to incorporate both of the projects that I created for this assignment in my classes this fall. I think it is important for students to have a wide variety of resources which is what I currently lack in my classes. Some of my content is difficult for online students, so I think they will benefit from both of these projects.
