Other software programs discussed in Chapter 8 caught my attention as well. Reference software would be extremely helpful if incorporated into my grammar class. Reference software includes digital software references such as dictionaries and grammar checkers. Although I don’t feel that software can take the place of having a solid understanding of grammar rules, I do feel that it can be helpful for students who are learning grammar. The problem that I will have implementing this technology into my course is that my class does not meet in a computer lab room, and not all students have access to an electronic device.
While waiting in the lobby of a doctor’s office last week, I witnessed grade-school children completing homework on tablets. I could not help but notice that the assignments were in the form of games. After reading the chapter, I realized that the children were using Education Game Software. As people of all ages engage in playing video games and computer games for enjoyment, if I could find Education Game Software that is appropriate for post-secondary students, I am sure that my students would not mind completing course assignments.
The documents that we created this week, the podcast and the movie, can also help me with creating course material that is tailored to meet the needs of my class. I feel that both of these assignments will be useful for me, and I plan to implement the ones that I created into my classes this fall. Links for both of these documents can be found at the end of this blog.
Podcast: I enjoyed creating my podcast. I wrote my script and practiced several times before I turned on the microphone. I was pleased that I didn’t have to record several times. This podcast was on commas, and I plan to use it in my classes this fall. I am going to create additional podcasts to discuss course materials and procedures for my online classes. Students will be required to listen to the podcast during the first week of class. I feel that hearing my voice will be more personable than providing only reading material. They will also be able to read the syllabus as well.
Video Project: I absolutely loved creating my video but found it to be somewhat difficult until I got the hang of it. I played with Movie Maker so much that I feel like I am a pro at it now. I can see that creating videos/movies will also be useful in my classes and plan to use the one I created in the upcoming semester. I teach a professional development course as well. My students often research on topics such as time management and characteristics of a good team member, and they present their findings to the class. I think that they would enjoy creating a movie that can be played to the class. I am going to pilot this idea in the fall semester. Hopefully, I will be able to easily teach them how to use Movie Maker!
